Numbers - CSV Import - Set Field Type

It is fairly common for a spreadsheet to allow the user a change to set the field data types as an initial step to importing a CSV file. Numbers does not appear to offer this critical function. Am I missing it?

In other words, when importing a dataset that include Part Numbers, for example. The field is actually a TEXT field, even though some values may only contain numeric values.

Worst case is a part number with leading zeros, such as "00046235097".

At the time of import, Numbers does not ask the user to declare the field type for each column, so no opportunity to tell Numbers that his is a TEXT field. Instead, it interprets it as a number, and drops the leading zeros. In other cases, it will take what is a long part number and perform exponential notation on it.

The net result is that a user must take the CSV file and first pass it through Excel or Google Sheets (that do offer this critical pre-filter step), save it, and then open it in Numbers.

Has anyone found a way to have Numbers stop and ask, before making bad assumptions about data type?
