iPhone Calendar contains duplicate and old entries after updating Mac to Ventura

I recently updated my iMac (27-inch 2020) to Ventura and am currently up to date with Ventura 13.4. My iPhone is a 14 Pro. After the Ventura update, when I first manually synched my iMac/iPhone, the Calendar entries got all screwed up on the iMac: looooots of duplicate entries. So I spent a few hours on the iMac manually deleting all the duplicates (from 2028 to present...yep...I really rely on Calendar and it's important to me to have the same info on my Mac and iPhone). Then I tried a synch from my Mac to my phone, with the "Replace Calendars" box checked so, "During the next sync, information on this iPhone will be replaced with information from this Mac" would be honored. That process is not working properly. While my iMac Calendar still looks good, the iPhone has random duplicate entries, and old entries that have previously been deleted on the Mac.

I do not use iCloud.

I have tried various things, none of which have worked, including:

  • deleting all the Calendars inside the Calendar app on the iPhone, and then synching again
  • updating my iPhone iOS to 16.5
  • deleting and restoring the Calendar app on the iPhone
  • confirmed I am indeed not using iCloud
  • just in case it helped, I did temporarily turn iCloud on, via the web interface, and deleted any entries that were there in Calendar (there was ancient stuff; I deleted everything except the US Holidays and Birthdays calendars); turned iCloud back off

I'm scared to do a synch without checking that box every time, to make sure the iMac is overriding the iPhone, lest everything get screwed up on my iMac again. (That box is un-checked by default, and I find I have to rush to check it again right after starting a synch, even when I do start out with it checked, because it unchecks itself.) But no matter how many times I repeat the process, it does not work correctly.

Before trying all of these things again today, on the iMac, in Calendar, I did File > Export > Calendar Archive, so I do have a file with the .icbu suffix, which I HOPE would restore my iMac calendar to its current state if I do accidentally mess it up again. But meanwhile, I need to get the correct Calendar info onto my iPhone. (BTW I don't see any way to use that exported archive file from the iMac for getting the data onto the iPhone.)

This garbled Calendar scenario has happened to me multiple times over the years. There has never been a clear reason as to why, or a pattern that indicates what I should do to correct it, since each time seems different. Every time it does happen (maybe once every couple of years) I swear I will not go through the torture of troubleshooting and rectifying the situation again, but I really rely on Calendar, so it's worth it to me to get it fixed. REALLY hoping for some tip that will salvage this situation. Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer any useful advice.

Thanks for letting me know about that. So far, today, I still have the same situation:

  • Mac calendar is good (after I originally manually deleted all the extra entries last week)
  • iPhone calendar does not show any entries, except for a few that I edited on the Mac today; for some reason, those show up on the iPhone, but not of the other entries do (all of the calendars do...meaning the Calendar categories, and they change on the iPhone if I make changes to them on the Mac, to hide/show, etc.)
  • online browser iCloud version of Calendar is just like the phone (as described in the previous bullet)

Since I have checked and rechecked all the settings that I can find, and since the browser and phone versions DO update if I make changes as described above, it's still a mystery as to why the bulk of my Calendar entries don't show up, other than on the Mac. Sigh.

Thanks again for your communication with me on this! And I'm glad all your devices seem to be playing nicely for now!

After updated today to Ventura 13.4 on my M1 iMac, my calendar was totally screwed, seemingly similar to what you describe. I was afraid the crazy calendar would mess up my phone and other device calendars, so I switched

iCloud sync off for the calendar. Apple menu/system settings/Apple ID/iCloud/apps using iCloud/switch Calendar sync OFF. The duplicate entries on my Mac calendar were now gone, along with everything else except default holidays and such. But the calendar looked normal, if empty. So, I switched iCloud sync back on and the calendar repopulated my items in the normal fashion. It looks fine now. Whew!

Thanks gdmedia. I have purposely never used iCloud with Calendar, since in the past it seemed like it might have caused this exact sort of duplicate entry problem. But today I decided to try it, since nothing else is helping.

On my iPhone, I deleted all the calendars except US Holidays and Birthdays. Then I turned on iCloud for Calendar on the iPhone, and also on the Mac. Nothing happened on the phone, so I went to iCloud in my computer browser, to see that interface. That has updated to all my current Calendars (in the left sidebar) but there are NO ENTRIES showing up on the actual day/week/month views. And the same is true now on the iPhone: it has brought in the calendar categories, but is not showing any entries at all. (And my Mac calendar is full of entries.)

At least this hasn't resulted in a lot of crazy duplicates (yet!) Will see if anything changes. Meanwhile, if anyone has advice, please chime in. Thanks!

Another clue: now that I have iCloud turned on (see above reply from me to gdmedia) if I alter a calendar entry in Calendar on my Mac, that entry then immediately shows up in the Calendar in the browser interface. I went through all the Calendar/iCloud settings on the iPhone, and now those couple of entries also show up on the phone BUT NO OTHER ENTRIES THAT ARE ON MY MAC SHOW UP ON EITHER THE BROWSER INTERFACE OR THE PHONE. I certainly can't go through and make some change to every entry, just to get it to show up. And I can't think of anything else. Is there a setting I'm missing???

I imagine you've checked to make sure iCloud is turned on for Calendar on all the devices and tried turning it off and back on a time or two on your Mac. Seems like I remember sync issues where it took more than one off/on to make it sync.

In my case, the Calendar was messed up after the last Ventura update (13.4). Apparently, something about that update or my iMac's interaction with it that messed up the Calendar's sync--something that did not happen when I did the sync again. Wonder if I had just left the screwed up Calendar alone, if it would have fixed itself the next time it did an automatic sync. Or would it have spread the disease to all the others? No idea.

I also have a MacBook that will need the update. I will shut off its Calendar iCloud button before I do it. You'd think if this were a common problem with that update, we'd be seeing lots of complaints about it, which I don't see.

Same with me. Started with the Ventura update. (Though it has happened to me other times, over the years...probably with other OS updates.)

I know! I always feel like, "Am I the only person this is happening to???" :)

Yes, I have checked the iCloud setting so many times I feel like a crazy person. Since turning on iCloud today, I actually have NOT tried the manual synch again (hardwiring my phone to my computer and doing a synch); I have only looked for updates to show up via iCloud. Do you still do the physical connect/synch, or everything synchs for you via iCloud now? Thanks for your help!

I do the iCloud sync for calendar on all my devices. Interesting twist, this morning, I updated my iPad to IOS 16.5. Paranoid, I turned off the iPad's calendar sync before updating. After the update, guess what? iPad calendar totally screwed up, just like what I saw on my Mac. So, turning off the sync prior to updating was not the solution. But, this time, the fix was easy. I just turned the iCloud sync back on and the calendar went immediately back to its old normal self.

I also updated Ventura on my Macbook and IOS on my iPhone. No calendar problems with those.

Since I had this happen to two different devices with this recent round of updates, seems like a lot of people would have the same problem but I haven't seen that yet.

I'm very frustrated since updating to Ventura. I can't find a way to make my iPhone over ride my Macbook. Macbook keeps switching weekly and yearly events to daily. When it syncs it makes that happen on the phone. I have talked to Apple support numerous times. It has continued to happen with every new update. I only sync over usb for HIPAA privacy reasons.

I have already turned off all accounts - I don't use any other calendars so none of them need to sync to my iCalendar. In the edit menu, the start and end dates are the today's date (whatever day it is) but the repeat keeps getting switched from yearly or weekly to daily.

Is there a way to tell the sync menu to only sync from my phone to my Macbook and never vice versa?

My current ISO is 14.1.1 and iPhone is 17.1.2.

The whole point is to have a backup on my Mac. If the back up calendar is messed up, it doesn't serve the function. This is so frustrating. It's been going on for 2 years and it's still happening. This should be a very simple bug fix and it should have been fixed a long time ago. I'm much more interested in basic functionality than fancy new capabilities. If the basics don't work what's the point of a $4000 computer?

Well, the backup was for extra safety but if you don't trust it just skip that part and go straight for the erasure.

I cannot predict what will happen to the new calendar once it's transferred from the iPhone. Your situation seems pretty abnormal and I'm leaning towards a corruption of some sort that starting anew will eliminate. To make sure of it, don't just empty the old calendar, get rid of it completely.

Of course, there's also the good old method of deleting the preferences file that sometimes does wonders. You'll find com.apple.iCal.plist at ~/Library/Preferences.

Just to be sure, if you have repeating events each instance lasts only a few hours or one day maximum, right? Some people think that a weekly event starting January 1st and ending March 31st must have an end date of March 31st. No, the end date of the first instance is January 1st, but the end of repetition is March 31st. Otherwise, you're just creating a bunch of three-month-long overlapping events.
