Front USB Ports no longer working for USB drives

I have a 2022 Mac studio running 13.4 (22F66). After a Ventura update last month, the front USB C ports no longer read connected drives.

Info:

  1. when non-Thunderbolt flash drives (I have tried several) are connected to the front USB C ports using a non-Thunderbolt cable, I get the error “The disk you attached was not readable by this computer.” the only options are to eject or ignore.
  2. Sometimes I get the message "USB Accessory Needs Power." These are unpowered flash drives.
  3. The drives work fine when connected to rear Thunderbolt ports with a Thunderbolt cable.
  4. The ports do charge peripherals
  5. USB drives, iPhone, and iPad show up on the USB Bus (system report) but DRIVES do not show with Finder or Disk Utility. The iPhone/iPad does show with Finder although intermittently.

Appreciate any assistance

Thanks for the info. Not sure what happened, but after several weeks of trying to figure this out, immediately after posting here the problem seemed to fix itself after booting with the drive plugged in. Now I can disconnect it and reconnect with no apparent issues.
