Safari won't show the search result page but go straight to website

When I search for something on Safari, for example, "flower", it usually shows a result page of all the relevant websites, right? From top to bottom, with a few sponsored searches on top, we're all familiar with that. But sometimes, not always, it will go straight to any website that is directly named as my search. Like if someone made a www./flower.com website, Safari will lead me there and not the search page. If the website doesn't exist it would just straight up tell me it can't direct me there or something.

Another problem I have that I think is connected to this is that sometimes when there is a space bar in my search, Safari replaces it with %20 and makes it impossible for me to search for anything. Even if I cut the %20 out or delete it, it just appears again. ("Ask a question" becomes "Ask%20a%20question). I looked around and apparently, it's like a code thing, but none of the pages tell me how I can get rid of it.

This is really annoying and it always seems to know when I'm in a rush to show up. Would really appreciate some help. Thanks!

Hi ntdal,

The support article If Safari doesn't open a page or work as expected on your Mac is a good place to start with a concern of this nature. Based upon your description, it could be that pages you've visited in the past are attempting to load when you intend to search for the term instead. It could also be a matter of the search engine you have set Safari to use. Checking your Safari settings, clearing history or cache, or testing with a different search engine per Change Search settings in Safari on Mac are all good steps to try.

Regards.
