iphone doesn't respect "conversation line" or "preferred line" when sending messages

I have an iphone 12 with 1 eSIM (Verizon, business) and one physical SIM (Tmobile, personal). Often (not always), when sending messages, the phone ignores my selection of personal conversation / preferred line. I can receive phone calls and text messages from both lines, and sometimes send new text messages from the desired personal line, but when responding to old conversations that were on my personal line, iphone forcefully switches to my business line, regardless of the selecting the personal line as both the preferred line in the contact info, and the conversation line in the message.

Is anyone else experiencing this or found a solution to resolve it? Please don't submit any links to docs showing how to select the preferred line or conversation line.

There is a difference between "Last Used" and "Always Use"

if you have selected a Line for a Contact, Say Line B as "Always Use"

and If that contact sends you a text using Line A then if you reply to that contact using the received message in the Message App as a continuation of the conversation then the Contact will be assigned as "Last Used"

Always start a conversation from the Contacts App if you want to keep Business and Personal lines separate.

If you start the conversation from the old thread then you cannot change it. Start a new conversation from Contacts App. Here you can change the number as well as the Line. As shown in the GIF below
