Why does Time Machine want to erase my APFS drive?

I just converted my backup drive to APFS for use with Time Machine on Monterey on my new Macbook 2021 and still, when I try to start TM - it gives me no other option but to compeltely erase the drive which I do not want to do as I'm using it for other things as well.

What's going on here?

You need to add a new volume or partition the drive and select it for Time Machine.

FWIW, It's not the best idea to share Time Machine backups with data becuase if the drive fails, you lose both.

Time Machine wants an entire volume all to itself. Nature of the beast.

If you want to have Time Machine backups and other data on the same hard drive, you will need to erase the drive and then partition the drive into at least two separate sections.

Of course, you would want to copy/transfer your existing data over to another temporary storage device....before....you erase the existing drive, then copy it back over to the new separate partition that you have set up for that data.

If the budget permits, things would be tons easier if you leave your existing drive alone and simply add another hard drive dedicated only to Time Machine backups.
