I wanted to reinstall High Sierra on an old (2011) MacBook. But after choosing Reinstall, I received the message "The recovery server could not be contacted." My wifi connection and internet are functioning however. Could anyone advise me?

Hi, I had the exact same problem. It would show “the recovery server could not be connect” for me also but that was when I pressed CMD+R to go to recovery settings.
Instead I restarted my mac then pressed Option+R and tried to reinstall MacOS again and it worked perfectly! Just follow all the instructions.

I suggest you do this: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support
I really do not know what happens if you download it on a Windows-PC. On the Mac it started to install itself after downloading. That will of course not be successful on a Windows-PC. But maybe you can try.
I downloaded High Sierra from macOS downloaden - Apple Support (NL). After the download it installed itself.

Except this doesn't work anymore since Apple does not include the createinstallmedia file in the package it tells you to download.
