Bluetooth Audio drops while phone is connected to Apple Watch

I've been having issues with my audio dropping on my phone when I use my airpods. Apple support wanted me to reset my phone and I resisted because I didn't want to have to redo all my authenticators. I noticed the other day that when I had my apple watch bluetooth turned off that the audio problems were fixed. My airpods no longer cut out. I have a series 8 watch working with an iphone 14 pro max and the series 1 airpods. Anyone else run into this issue and was able to resolve it?

However, I’m pretty sure the intended purpose of the watch was to not have to disconnect it everytime you connect something else to the phone. Hence my question.
