I downloaded a PDF from internet some days ago, a book for uni. I edited it, underlined something, you know the drill. Today I was going to open it but a window asking for a "owner password" appeared from nowhere. So the PDF is now encrypted. But why? By who? Originally, it didn't ask for any password. I was able to do whatever i wanted. How can this still be an issue?

Always used the Preview app, nothing from third part.

Try again however this time use a true PDF edit, and compare your results,

there are many, here are a few examples:

Acrobat Reader / Adobe Acrobat DC

PDFpen / Nitro

pdfExpert

Master PDF Editor

I tried them now but I still have the same problem...all of them ask me for the password. Btw it looks like I'm not the only one who has this problem, I found a similar question here but that wasn't solved either.

This problem seems kinda strange to me tbh

The suggestion is download a fresh copy of your PDF from your un-named source...

Use a true PDF editor to edit, make your changes— and compare your results.

If it happens again using a true PDF editor then I would consult with the 'source' of the PDF you are trying to modify...and ask for their assistance.

If you did not author the PDF you may not have permission to r/w to this PDF and it would be out of your control.

It's not illegal or something like that, it's a book given to me by the professor. As I said before, I edited it days ago – even if I'm not the author. And i kept doing this for 3-4 days, until now. It had no password.

I will modify it using a..."true" PDF editor. That said, I think that it should NOT be a problem to edit PDFs using preview. There's no reason as an Apple user to use another software if Apple gave me one. So I don't understand what's causing this..."bug" and why it's still not fixed. It's not a problem Apple users should have.

Yeah, you know what i meant,.

Sorry, I don't read minds.

I don't need an advanced PDF tool if all I have to do is basic. Preview is enough for me. All I'm saying is that there should be no problem in using it. But there is.

And, since there is, you need to use something else. Preview is great for a lot of things. However, for some more complicated pdfs, it doesn't do so well.
