Gmail inbox not showing read emails

Usually Apple Support is excellent. But now after removing gmail account & adding it back in, my inbox now shows only unread emails. It is the same if I log into Gmail under my browser Google Chrome on Mac. Seems like a Google Chrome issue. (Google Chrome is updated.) I'm working on a 2023 MacBook Pro with updated Ventura, but my synced iPhone 12 is also having the issues. If I uninstall Google Chrome on MacBook Pro, using AppCleaner (it deletes all files in Mac according to app you are deleting) and install it again , will I lose my saved passwords and bookmarks in Google Chrome? Unsure if I uninstall Google Chrome in any manner, if when I reinstall Google Chrome that I can just sign into my account and everything will still be there. Thanks ahead of time for some feedback.

There are two things that I did when I used to run Gmail in Mail. I found them on a blog from at least a decade ago.

First, turn off showing any of the special folders in IMAP so there are less opportunity for confusion on where a message is stored.

Second, disable storing messages forever in All Mail.

In the Gmail web interface, click on the Settings (gear button) and click Show All Settings.

On the Labels tab, disable All Mail in IMAP and any others you don't want to see.

On the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, turn Auto-Expunge off and then select Immediately delete the message forever.

I turned off the Spam and Junk labels in IMAP as I don't use the Gmail account for anything but a spam sponge. I just signed up for lists using that email address. I now use Hide My Email for those types of things.

Thanks. The filter button was enabled in Mail on Mac. When I disabled it, I regained 3 unread emails from today. Great start. I can always move others I had in inbox from "All Mail". Maybe sometime, if you choose, an added question. This was the inbox below my Gmail address. Glad to have that. I do have under Favorites at the very top, my email address "inbox" where I always used to go for getting/managing incoming email. I can't even left click on it. A right click gives a menu. I'll worry about that tomorrow or so. I very much appreciate your reply!!!

Thanks for your input! I would appreciate your settings suggestions on Gmail sometime, no huge rush. Before reading your reply, I did get my Gmail in Mail working better, more like it was. But I think possibly that my same Gmail account behaves better on my old 2013 MacBook Air than on my 2023 MacBook Pro that has Apple silicon and Ventura. Again, I greatly appreciate the response!!!

Barney-15E, sorry for the late reply! Thank you so much for the using of Gmail in Mail suggestions! I will look into it further when I get time. Gmail is my only email now and it would be a huge hassle to change to a more cooperative email. I know you didn't necessarily suggest changing, but just saying. So I really appreciate your input as someone who has worked with Gmail in the past.
