How can I stop frequent "Critical virus alert" pop-up notifications on my Mac?

How do I stop frequent pop-up notifications that say things like "Critical virus alert", "System Mac OS is infected!", "Act Fast! Mac at Risk", "Detected virus: Trojan_BO8DF831059"?

Stop going to the web sites that are posting them.

As (I hope) you're aware, these are spam attacks, designed to separate you from your money..

They are most often propagated via pop-up ads on sketchy web sites (or, at least, web sites that don't care about the integrity of ads they show).

You can turn on the 'Block pop-up windows' option in your browser (both Safari and Chrome have this option as I'm sure do others), which can help, but ultimately it's a game of whack-a-mole that no one has really yet solved
