How to remove activation lock from my iPad?

iPad was given to me by my sister. She can’t remember the password and no longer use the address @icloud.com. How can I remove the activation lock from this device.

Troubleshooting a Locked iPad:

Being you cannot log in to it, I'd say you've been scammed, though a full-assumption on my part.

  • Take this up with the Original Owner:

This is a user-to-user support forum - no one here can change any of that. So, contact the original owner, and have them log out of it. If they cannot log out of it, then it is useless to you.

  • If Purchased off of a Web site(i.e. eBay):

Contact the site, and ask that the seller be held accountable and that you get your money back.

  • Take this as a learning experience:

The next time you purchase an Appledevice, then make sure that you can log into it. For an iPhone, have the original user use this site: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple SupportThe seller should have known better. Request that you are able to log into it, and assign it to your account, prior to handing over the money. If the seller decides to dis-abide by those rules you've set fourth, then do not proceed with the transaction.

Presumably you are being prompted for your AppleID credentials - so as to satisfy the Activation Lock. You will require the AppleID an associated password that was last used to successfully activate the device - which, for the bona-fide owner, should be straightforward. Only your sister will be able to resolve this - as the device is locked to her AppleID account.

Here are the Apple support pages that outline the Activation Lock - and the only mechanisms by which it can be satisfied:

Activation Lock for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Turn off Activation Lock – Apple Support

As you will discover, unless you are the owner of the AppleID that was last used to activate the device, you’ll not be able to defeat or bypass the Activation Lock. With documentary evidence that you are the original owner (such as sales receipt showing the serial number), Apple may be prepared to assist - otherwise they and nobody here will be able to help you.

If you have the necessary documentation, Apple have introduced a portal though which you may be able to request release of an Activation Lock:

How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support & start an Activation Lock support request.

However, recovery of the AppleID credentials should be possible…

If you have forgotten your AppleID or associated password, these can be recovered here:

https://iforgot.apple.com/

To recover your credentials, you’ll need access to any one of the following:

  • Your primary email address mailbox that corresponds with your AppleID
  • Any of the secondary/recovery email addresses that should be configured for your AppleID account
  • Any of the trusted telephone numbers (fixed line or Cellular/Mobile) that are associated with your AppleID

Successfully Getting a Rested Device:

1. Remove the Activation Lock:

Your sister needs to go back in to here iCloud account, and then remove the activation lock. IF she no longer has this Apple ID, it cannot be gotten in to. So, see if she can unlock it for you. Have here go here: How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support.

then...

2. Set this Up Anew:

She needs to set this up anew, because she is giving it to a new user. You should never share you account with anyone whomsoever. Have her perform as instructed here, including the iCloud sign out. What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade In your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
