How do you back up the device if you cannot mount it? The device worked for several years, connected to my previous iMac, and then for two years on a new iMac until an Apple updated disconnected it. It is ridiculous to tell someone to back up a device they cannot connect to.

I also have this issue. I have two M1 Mac Minis at two different locations. Same issue on both of them. This issue seems to have occurred with the most recent Ventura updates. I use Paragon's NTFS for Mac. It was working perfectly fine last month. NTFS for Mac can see the different drives but cannot mount them. Same with Disk Utility.
Hello Frustratutorial,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.
If you have never used these external drives with your Mac in the past, it may be necessary to Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac. Please be sure to back up your files first as this step will erase the drive.
If the drives still will not connect, try to unplug and connect them again to your Mac. You can also use Disk Utility to check the drives and repair some issues: How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility.
You will also want to be sure that the drives are set to show up in the Finder. From the Finder menu bar, choose Finder > Settings (or Preferences). Then click General and make sure that “External disks” is selected.
You can also check if your drives connect with other computers as expected. If there are issues with multiple computers, contact the drive manufacture for more help.
All the best!
