All iCloud inbox emails suddenly vanished

All of my incoming iCloud emails have vanished on my Mac Studio, iPhone, iPad, and iCloud web. I was updating a rule to move some messages to another folder. A minute later, all of my iCloud emails disappeared.

I checked all of the folders I created for rules. These are thousands of emails that just vanished. I checked my Time Machine backups, but they only seem to store emails stored locally not in iCloud. It appears they were all deleted, but they also do not show up in the Trash.

Any ideas of what might have happened? Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Jim

Hello Sanjac,

There was an iCloud Mail outage reported at Apple - Support - System Status yesterday. It's also possible that iCloud was working to move the files you were organizing and made them unavailable during the process. Have you seen the content return since posting?

If not, check to see if you can recover them on one of your devices.

When you delete a message, it’s saved in your Trash for 30 days, after which it’s permanently erased.

Whether you can view and retrieve messages after you delete them depends on how you set options in Mail settings.
1. In the Mail app on your Mac, choose Mail > Settings, then click Accounts.
2. Select an account, click Mailbox Behaviors, then check the setting for the Trash Mailbox option.
* If a mailbox is specified: You can view deleted messages in the Trash mailbox until they’re permanently erased. To retrieve a deleted message, drag it from the Trash mailbox to another mailbox.
* If None is specified: Deleted messages are removed and aren’t available in the Trash mailbox.

If you still don't see your missing iCloud emails, contact Apple Support for more advanced options. You can find ways to reach them here:
