I am interested in purchasing an Apple Watch for the safety feature in case of an emergency. However I am not sure how this connects to my cell phone. Will I need to notify my carrier and Will it incur another charge?

I have never had an Apple Watch and I am interested because of the SOS factor. Do I have to have a separate cellular charge in order to use my watch
