Running older Mac OS on an M2 Mac to run Aperture.

My older I-mac27" died suddenly, I was running Mojave as it is the last OS that supports Apples Aperture Photo program that I have used forever to process my images as HDR's. It's use is second nature to me as a photographer but I struggle with paying a subscription for newer programmes I struggle to use when Aperture costs me nothing an does all I need to easily.

I have read about parallel computer software and can not see that this would work and don't want to pay a subscription for some thing from the reviews has no mention of support for what I want to do.

Fortunately I had a time machine attached, I have nearly 2TB of photo's stored in the aperture application on it (hopefully) I can retrieve its library somehow?

I want to continue using Aperture on my new 2023 Mac Mini M2 Pro running Ventura. Is there any solution to run an older OS (Mojave) as a virtual machine or any other way, I am not an IT literate person, I just want things to work the way they used to.

Thanks in advance for any idea's.

Daryn.

I'm afraid not. Your only option would be to find a used Intel iMac that can run Aperture.

I understand your desire for all those features ... but if there is no product that provides them, it's a moot point.

Most of what you said can be done in iMovie and/or Final Cut Pro. Not the way Aperture would have done it, and not all, but nonetheless most can be done with them. Even Photos can produce slideshows that do most of what you asked for.

Unless you purchase an older, used Intel Mac that can run Aperture, it's time to move on. IMHO there is no app that replicates Aperture but you can migrate to other apps that are good substitutes.

Regarding migration ...

  • CaptureOne and Lightroom can import Aperture libraries.
  • Avalanche can migrate Aperture libraries to CaptureOne, Lightroom, Apple Photos & Luminar AI
  • PowerPhotos can migrate Aperture libraries to Apple Photos

Note however that the import/migration capabilities of each app is different; you will need to research them.

If all you need is a photo/video browser or digital asset management, consider:

  • Photo Mechanic
  • Photo Supreme
  • Apollo One
  • Mylio
  • Adobe Bridge
  • others ...

If you patch the Aperture App with retroactive (GitHub - cormiertyshawn895/Retroactive: Run Aperture, iPhoto, or iTunes on macOS Catalina.) you will get a Zombie Aperture that can open your Aperture Libraries, can repair them, export your photos, create high resolution previews of the edited versions. But many features will be missing. Use it only to get your Aperture Libraries ship-shape - to prepare them for migrating the Aperture Libraries to another professional application, if you cannot find a refurbished mac running Mojave to replace your old Mac.

The current version of PowerPhotos can migrate Aperture Libraries on macOS13 Ventura to Photos for Mac, preserving the albums and Library structure. The Photos.app can no longer do this on Ventura - macOS 12 has been the last system version to support the migration from Aperture to Photos.

You really need to fin a professional application to replace Aperture. I am currently using Luminar Neo to edit my photos. it is photocentric like Aperture has been, but it does not yet suffice as a photo manager. The DAM is a bit limited. So I am using Luminar as a photo editing extension in Photos.

I need the slide show tools from Aprature. (100% the best I have ever used). I also miss how Aprature was a way better hybrid photographer tool for handling video & stills. I am actively shopping for the best old Mac that can run Aperture 3.0 just for the slide show tools. If there were a modern Aprature with all of the tools from before, App I'd pay $$$$ for it. Apple Please bring it back. Light R***** has killed my hybrid process with poor or lack of video and slideshow creation support.
