Apple MAPS App

Does anybody know why the uncertainty circle around the user's location in the Apple MAPS App seems to no longer reduce to a dot (after the GPS fix is complete, apparently) in the new version of the app, as it used to do in the previous versions? I cannot find where this behavior can be changed in the MAPS settings. MAPS works correctly on my IPHONE 13 ProMax running ios 16.4.1, but not on my 12.9-inch IPAD Pro, also running ios 16.4.1. On the latter the fix never seems to complete. Same location, same app for both devices.

Do you have a WiFi+Cellular iPad, or a WiFi Only model?

Only the WiFi+Cellular models of iPad have GNSS/GPS capabilities - this being a function of the iPad Cellular chipset.  WiFi Only models of iPad have no GPS capabilities with which iPad Location Services can derive location. This fundamental difference may significantly impact your ability to use mapping Apps - in particular if real-time positioning (e.g., a moving map) is required.

WiFi Only iPad models can only “infer” their location from a database lookup of neighbouring WiFi networks for which the geographic location is known, or the geographic location of your public IP address. For static applications in urban locations, where the location of IP public IP addresses and WiFi networks are known, an “inferred” location can be relatively accurate. However, in rural locations, or when using a Cellular/Satellite/VPN connection, location accuracy of an inferred location [if it works at all] may be very inaccurate.

As you have a WiFi Only iPad, as you will only see the inferred location, you won’t see the “uncertainty circle” that you describe.

The circle is a statistical computation based upon the geometry of visible GNSS/GPS satellites - this being known as DOP (Dilution of Precision). This statistic allows a potential uncertainty error to be calculated and displayed. As this statistic is cannot be calculated for an inferred position fix, you’ll not see the the circle.
