Small correction. Everyone has to be using iMessage. There are people with iPhones who do not. If they are not using it, and only using SMS, you'll have the same problem.

Very good point, I did assume everyone was using iMessage.

My sister-in-law who has an iPhone keeps switching back and forth.... So, I know from bitter experience.
