Microsoft Exchange account in Mail "Unable to verify account"

G'Day Community,

I don't know if I'm having Macbook issue or Exchange issue.

I have an Exchange email account in Mail in addition to a gmail account and an internet provider account.

The gmail and IP account work fine, but I keep getting a situation where the Exchange account won't download and gives me the "Unable to verify account name or password" message. In the past we have had to delete the Exchange internet/email account and then re-add it.

However, this no longer works. I deleted the exchange account from Internet accounts and Email accounts, but now when I try to restore them, I get the above message. The confusing part of this is the account is still active and working (sending and receiving emails) on both ipad and iphone Mail using the same account name/password combination. If I try to log into Exchange, same message and can't log in.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.13

I had that same problem with my Exchange accounts and found it to be caused by time and time zone settings that did not match my location. Here are the settings I recommend: Date & Time: Set time and date automatically, and also Set time zone automatically using your current location. In the Mac Calendar, Turn on time zone support. Exchange is particularly sensitive to time and time zone settings, whereas some other providers are not. If the Turn on time zone support toggle stops working, I had luck resetting things in Monterey by deleting Calendaragent in Activity monitor. I've read that in Ventura, exchangesyncd replaces Calendaragent.

Using app passwords with apps that don't support two-step verification (microsoft.com)

What about application passwords? Will that keep working?

If application passwords are being used for MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) along with basic auth as another auth mechanism, then when basic authentication is disabled, app passwords used for MFA will stop working too.

Where can I find more information?

There are several resources that we wanted to provide here as additional reading:

This information was helpful to understand why the Mail app suddenly stopped working on my old iPhone 6 - it's simply too old to support the new way Microsoft wants to do authentication.

For the record, I even tried downloading the Outlook app on the iPhone 6, but it downloaded an old version which also refused to connect. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Microsoft has been known to link many of their accounts now to the iPhone/Android app called Authenticator. Depending on the use of the account, if it is a school or private company they may require multifactor authentication with the phone registering a code to login the account.

If it is a personal hotmail account, I would get your settings directly from their website logging in http://www.outlook.com/

Thanks to a brody and BDAqua for the replies. Unfortunately, I made a mistake in my description of the problem. Turns out it isn't an Exchange account (not sure why we labelled it as such), but rather a GoDaddy domain host

webmail account - hope I got that correct.

My computer details: Early 2011 MacBook Pro (Upgraded 16 GB RAM and 1 TB SSD); High Sierra 10.13.6

I have reviewed the GoDaddy online support 'Add my Workspace Email to Mail (Mac)' and followed the instructions then contacted GoDaddy Tech support directly. They confirmed everything we have done to try and re-install the webmail account is correct, there are no issues on their end and the username/password combination is correct as the account is working correctly on the 2 other devices. Prior to last week, the account on the Macbook had been working correctly for over a year and we haven't changed or upgraded any software.

Is it possible that even though I deleted the internet/email account, some remnant remains and this is interfering with re-adding it? When trying to add the account and select Other, as instructed by the online help and tech support (as compared to Google, Exchange, etc), it pre-populates the 'Name' box with the previous name. Is this normal as I expected an empty box? Is there a way to ensure all traces of the previous Mail account are removed?

I feel now this has to be an issue with the computer rather than the host webmail.

Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions.

Are you saying this doesn't work?

Go through setting everything up to a Fake Server, none of the Apple choices, replace the part after the @ sign with like @fakeserver.net when setting up this fake account, use all the right ports authentication, & passwords, wait for mail to say it failed do you want to save this account anyway, say yes, then you can go back in & edit the 2 servers to Earthlink.com or whatever instead of @fakeserver.net
