Auto Sampler not recording External Gear properly

I'm trying to use the Auto Sampler plugin to sample a patch on my external Korg Wavestation synth.

I can play the wavestation just fine with my normal yamaha midi keyboard, I get midi control as well as audio in Logic, but when I click on the "virtual" keys in the auto sampler app nothing happens. I don't get a midi light on my Wavestation like I do when I play physical keys on my controller, and I don't hear anything.

When I try and actually run the sampler, it looks like its taking the sample recording. However, when I open the Sampler software instrument and load the .exs sample I created, there are no audio wave forms or anything there - like its not actually recording samples.

It appears that when I press keys on the virtual keyboard in logic in auto sampler, it should play sounds and show a midi light on the external piece like when I do it with my real keyboard, but that doesn't happen. Is there something special I have to do to get my Mac "internal" midi to send back out to the Synth?

I've got everything routed into an iconnectivity mio midi interface, and I have no trouble playing all my outboard synths with my keyboard normally.
