Updated contact info - lost all text message history

Hi there,

My fiancee has an Android phone, and recently bought an iPad. I wanted to add his iPad to my contacts so we can enable AirDrop as each other's contacts, and I sent myself a test message from his iPad to my phone. When I added his email address from the iMessage to his contact info, our entire SMS text history was replaced by the single test message from his iPad. Is there any way to recover those texts? They don't show in my deleted messages.
