Can't set email up as IMAP on iphone & ipad only POP3

I've had to delete and re-install my email on iphone and ipad (it is a BT email address) but it doesn't give me the option to set it up as a IMAP email and automatically does it as a POP3. I can't see how to change this (always have been able to before) and I now have over 3000 emails because it hasn't synced then as read, deleted etc. Any ideas what I am doing wrong. My iphone is on iOS 16.4.1 and Ipas is 16.3.1

Had the same problem on iphone 14 but found a way around it. When setting up your email account, enter a wrong password. It will be rejected and the next screen will give the option of imap or pop3.

Contact BT support using the link below to see if they can help you set up the email service as IMAP. Surely, they are familiar with mail setup on an iPhone or iPad.
