Subscription for Logic on iPad

I've never been more happy and sad about seeing Apple related news. I've been waiting 10 years for Logic on iPad, but seeing it's subscription-based is like getting an iced bucket dumped on your head. I know traditionally we don't "own" the other software, we're just licensing it, but renting Logic feels wrong. Part of making a home studio is the excitement about building up your gear and feeling a sense of pride, ownership, and mastery of your tools. It won't have that same feeling now. I'm excited that this relatively low price will help more people be able to learn pro-software, but could you please make a way to purchase a perpetual license also?

I feel the same way. When I first saw that Logic Pro was on iPad I thought Great! Maybe I should buy a new iPad? Then I saw the subscription and now I have no plans whatsoever to get a new iPad or to use Logic Pro on iPad. I'll just stick to my Mac version, but will be very disappointed and actually shattered if they decide to have Logic Pro on Mac Subscription based. After using it since Atari days when it first came out, I may look elsewhere, because being a full time musician and working sporadically, it would be difficult to pay on a per month basis for all my software. Mac or otherwise! Ridicoulous that some people would lose their ability to work on their Software because they can't pay the monthly subscriptions. By saving & purchasing full outright software, it allows us to keep our current computers and keep working if we can't afford a subscription.

for a couple of years ago I heard Logic was coming to iOS so I thought I would wait for it and also thinking about getting the newest iPad Pro to run it but subscription is a no way Jose. It is not about the money is a matter of principle. Come on Apple do it right they might not be Apple products but there are a lot of apps that do the same out there. Musicians are loyal people Apple should do the same. Nobody is asking to be free but subscription? No way Jose

I've been using Auria for 10 years on an iPad, so Logic on iPad is nothing ground breaking. Plus, some of us use libraries, like with the Native Instruments engine. There's no way to fit that much stuff on an iPad, so the iPad version is of zero use to me. But yes, it's a bit of a harbinger that Apple is about to jump on the subscription bandwagon. Brace yourselves...

Those are really great points, SouthPawed. It seems that "subscriptions" are an evolving business model for software; I subscribe to the Eventide bundle (contains every single one of their plugins). I doubt I could work without it, but I've never been able to steel myself for the one-time $1400 cost for a perpetual license.

I think to me, the issue with Logic on an iPad is that, as far as my workflow and music is concerned, it's just a $5.00 toy. Other than Eventide, I don't use a lot of software plugins and I doubt those are ever doing to be ported to the iPad. Ditto VIs and software instruments, Native Instruments libraries, Toontrak Superior Drummer, Ugritone and so on. And how's the routing going to work? How would I plug in my analog signal chain?

Strikes me that Logic on iPad is aiming for the same audience that the "grid" feature in Mac Logic is for: people that do beats, samples, urban stuff, etc., more so than people who use a lot of "real" instruments. Which is fine: there's certainly a lot of them, and until, say, Ableton is ported to the iPad, this is not a bad option for them. Full confession, I'll probably get the Logic for iPad, but I can't imagine it being a serious part of workflow/studio. It'll just be a fun sketchpad, with perhaps a few more features than Garageband.

I wonder if putting down the use from other users like yourself to be in line with a serious enough workflow to be taken seriously by the professionals of industry is a deep reflection of the gap between eachs idea of functional knowledge. More so, that the various tools/ features that are being developed for each platform has to have the extensive reach and compassion for the individual trying to keep up with the ones born into the ecosystem of plugins and components that don’t have the matching physical actions to tie the understanding that humans, people have built common sense off of.

Hey great points and adjusting temperaments in writing styles gentleman, if you could hold back the undertones creating an impression that leans away from respectful and constructive taste it would receive appreciative feelings.

Have a great day.

I think that users should have the opportunity to pay outright for Logic Pro on iPad as an option when you have purchased Logic Pro on Mac and if you choose to pay outright!!

personally I find subscription services distasteful and thaT includes Apple subscription, have Them for those that Want them but provide an option to buy…

I prefer to own and buy my music no forever subscribing!!,

Apple are very disappointing these days They have lost their way across the board, lower quality less imagination

THINK DIFFERENT. Stop following the pack

For the first time ever, I am thinking of stopping being 'loyal' to Apple. Renting should be an OPTION. and buying must remain the other OPTION. It feels like a greedy money grab as a long term goal. I can't stand companies that lose touch with why they started out in the first place. Making profit of course, but milking and exploiting...that's another story. Too bad, Apple.

I’m not completely sure what point you are trying to make, but it certainly wasn’t my intention to put down makers of electronica, urban etc. that is an interpretation you brought to the discussion. Electronica and urban has different needs and workflow than heavy/doom/black metal. That’s the only point I was making, and if you read what I wrote as some sort of a put down, that came from you, not me.

Agreed.

To be fair, the growing popularity of the subscription model is a little bit more understandable for other software companies whose livelihood is based on selling licenses. But even they offer options for both subscription and perpetual license.

For apple- a company worth over $2 trillion last time i checked- to force users into a subscription model seems unnecessary at best.

Subscriptions are the biggest downfalls for apps/programs. Everyone I know refuses to use any program now that has moved over to the subscription format. The fact the new iPad Pro m4’s are more powerful than MacBook pros but limited by horrible iPadOS is another downside. These iPads should be running a full OS to allow the use of desktop programs, not dumbed down apps. I guess the waiting will have to continue until Apple gets their act together.
