"Your account doesn't allow editing on a Mac" after migration to new Mac

Hi. This began as a question and has ended up as an answer, as I solved the problem while writing the question.

I have just migrated from an MBP 2018 to a new MBP 2023. I used the Apple migration assistant and everything (seemingly) went smoothly, except for one thing.

I was no longer able to edit Office 365 files on my new Mac using the desktop applications.

Editing worked perfectly on my old MBP, but failed on the new device, in the same day.

I did a LOT to test and try to fix this. All failed. Including;

  1. Log out of all application & log in.
  2. Log out of all application & restart computer login
  3. Update applications and repeat
  4. Checked Licence with Admin. Licence is Good.
  5. Deleted UBF8T346G9.ms, UBF8T346G9.Office, UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost. Close all applications. Restart. Log out. log in etc.
  6. Deleted Office completely off new computer. Download and reinstall a fresh copy. Log in.

None of these had any effect. I still could not edit Office files and still recieved the message; "Your account doesn't allow editing on a Mac"

What did fix it was this;

How to remove Office license files on a Mac

I found it on this page;

Microsoft 365 Apps activation error: “Your account doesn’t allow editing on a Mac”

I hope it helps someone else. Good luck.

I was in the exact same situation, migrating from 2018 MBP to 2023 and having the same issue with Office 365. Your post helped fix my problem - thank you!
