How to import photos from an SD card onto my MacBook Air 2 without using iPhoto?

How do I import photos from an SD card onto my MacBook Air 2 without using iPhoto.? I began using iPhoto when I only had an iPad, and then also put them on the hard drive of my Windows laptop, to use DXO.

It seems with my new MacBook Air 2 that I can’t do this and can only use iPhotos. I’ve never used a Mac before and am very much out of my depth, so much so I really regret buying it.

Thank you for reading this, and I hope someone can help please

Insert the card into your card reader.

It shows up in the desktop.

Click on it. Locate the files you want to move. Drag them to a folder on the Mac.

Done.
