Can I use iPhone purchased in America with Chinese carrier?

I want to purchase an iPhone in the US as a gift for a friend who lives in China. I understand there are some issues with the US iPhone 14 model having an eSIM, which is not allowed in China. My question is what about previous models? Can any previous models be used with Chinese carriers?

You’d need to check with the carrier.

They may (will?) require a SIM and not eSIM, and which is not available in the US iPhone 14.

The warranty is also not international, which makes repairs more difficult, or unavailable.
