External HD error: com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error 49153

My Mac Studio desktop is running Ventura 13.3.1 (a) and recently decided to not mount two external hard drives. They are greyed out in Disk Utility and give the above error when I try to mount them. First Aid is grayed out.

In Recovery mode, they do mount but First Aid is still grayed out. I unmounted them in Recovery, unplugged the drives, rebooted the desktop, plugged them in... still did not mount.

I deleted the Time Machine snapshots, but nothing changed. Turning off Time Machine is not an option in the System Settings.

Do I have any other options? Why did my mac suddenly decide to reject these drives?

Mac Studio, macOS 13.3

Open Activity Monitor in Utilities, View>All Processes, sort on Name & see if fsck is running.

Are these Bus powered drives or do they have their own A/C power?

Strange cures...

Thanks for replying

These are bus-powered drives.

fsck is not running. I did try to reboot to single user mode, but it only came up in Recovery mode again.

I can mount the drives as read-only via NTFS for Mac, but one of them is only 10% full and I'd really like to put more stuff on it.
