Notes App Storage Issue - Space Taken Up Despite Few Notes

Hello Community and Apple Support Team,

I've been experiencing a problem with my iPhone's Notes app and I'm hoping someone here can provide some guidance. My iPhone keeps indicating that the Notes app is taking up a significant amount of storage space, even though I don't have nearly that many notes saved.

To give you an idea of the discrepancy, my phone's storage settings show that the Notes app is using up to 25 GB of space, but I only have around 20-30 short text notes, which shouldn't take up more than a few MB at most. I have already tried restarting my iPhone and updating to the latest iOS version, but the issue persists.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, or can anyone suggest a solution? I'm worried that this storage issue might affect the overall performance of my iPhone.

Thank you in advance for your help!

iPhone 12, iOS 16

I had the same problem that the few Notes I had stored (max 20 to 30) were taking up an absurd amount of space. I tried everything that was suggested to me but to no avail. I loved the ease of using the Notes App but kept being told I was about to run out of storage space on my phone. I tried using Notes again when I upgraded to new phones but encountered same problem. I even tried keeping only 2 Vip notes on the phone but still huge amount of space registered. I reluctantly therefore deleted Notes App. I have never found anything as good to replace it.

Hello alpassione,

Do you have your notes stored directly on the device or are they synced to iCloud? If you're not sure, check in Settings > name at the top > iCloud, to see if the Notes option is on. If it is on, check directly on the iCloud website and make sure the notes are showing up there.

If they are synced to iCloud and showing up on the website, try removing and reinstalling the Notes application to see if that fixes the storage discrepancy.

1. Touch and hold the app.
2. Tap Remove App Remove App icon.

Delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Once it's removed, just go into the App Store, search for "Notes" and reinstall the application. After that, check the storage usage to see if it is still using a large amount.

If the storage is still incorrect, you'll want to contact Apple to report the issue: Get Support

Cheers!

Hello, I would like to follow- up on this issue, same here: I use Apple Notes as my primary notes app bc of it's tight integration in the Apple ecosystem. However I noticed since the beginning that the data of this app occupy more space on my iPhone 12pro than I would expect.

  • Right now, I have a little over 500 notes (I often delete notes no longer needed), they occupied (according to settings) 13,5GB, which means roughly 27MB (!!!) per note.
  • in an attempt to slim down the memory space I deleted the app from the iPhone, reinstalled it and resynchronized the notes. Memory went down from 13,5 to 4,7GB. That still means a bit under 10MB per note.
  • I have zero videos or very large files attached to the notes, just short check lists, texts, and maybe 20-30% of the notes contain scanned documents (1-2 or 3 pages) scanned with the Note app itself.
  • problem is that in a german forum several users told me that their Notes app with also roughly 400-500 notes and scanned pages only contains 500MB, wich sounds far, far more reasonable.

Question: is there a hidden setting to avoid bloated memory space for the notes app? Storeage space is too expensive to waste it.

Thanks.

Same problem. It’s extremely annoying and discombobulating. Can’t rely on technology anymore to “improve” life. Going back to carrying an actual paper notebook that remains my own in my pocket. The only things consistent with These tech companies is disappointment. I have no room on my phone and have been unable to get rid of the notes app without fear of losing my notes. Confused and exhausted all the time these days from these companies.
