Youtube app on iphone - “No connection” on cellular data

When i turn off wifi and cellular data ON youtube app says “no connection”. However i can open youtube on the same device via chrome and play videos with wifi off and cellular data ON. Following are things i tried but nothing worked.

Settings-> Cellular -> ensured youtube is toggled ON
Tried resetting network settings
Tried reinstalling app
Tried restarting iphone

iPhone 12, iOS 16

Do you subscribe to YouTube premium?

In the YouTube app, look in your settings for something called smart download. If that is enabled or turned on, YouTube will automatically begin downloading videos that it thinks you might be interested in.

The data is stored on the phone, so it will keep working,without a signal.

Thats not my problem. My problem is youtube and apparently few other apps are not able to connect to internet on cellular data connection.
