Color profile change if laptop is open or closed

Hello,

I'm quite new to MacOS, I'm using and external monitor BenQ SW270C connect to my Air with USB-C port.

I've notice that if I keep open the laptop screen the color balance is more or less ok (warn) If I close the laptop (I'm not using two monitor) to use only the BenQ, color balance suddenly shift to very cold level of colours.

Because I'm working with photo editing tools I do not want MacOS to interfere with monitor color balance. How could I prevent MacOS to interfere with color profile?

My Displays settings.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 13.2

Hey freeman3k,

We’d be happy to point you in the best direction to find a solution. To get started, it looks like from your settings, that there’s no issue with NIght Shift or something like that adjusting the color profile, and this is likely just the nature of the monitor. You could try adjusting the color profile from the default one shown for your BenQ SW270C.

For other questions and concerns though, it’d be best to contact the manufacturer of the monitor to see if there’s any changes you can make to the settings of the monitor so that it’s to your liking.

For more info review the following details:

Change your Mac display’s color profile
In Displays settings, you can switch between different color profiles. Your Mac selects the recommended profile for your display by default, so it isn’t usually necessary to adjust this setting.

Note: Certain Mac models use built-in reference modes rather than color profiles. If you have Apple Pro Display XDR, Apple Studio Display, a 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021 or later), or a 16-inch MacBook Pro (2021 or later), see Change Displays settings.

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Displays  in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
2. Click the pop-up menu next to “Color profile” on the right, then choose the profile you want to use.

This is outlined further here: Change your Mac display’s color profile - Apple Support

We hope this helps out.

Take care!

Ciao,

thank you. I've also changed the color profile to see if fix the issue, but without success.

I'll check with the monitor manufacturer, but I do not believe is the monitor, for following reasons:

  • It occur on my Mac not on Windows (same monitor);
  • On Mac occur only if I close the laptop, so something happen with MacOs that decide to use a different color balance (with an High shift to cold white);

Thank you

Hi freeman3k,

I completely get what you're talking about because I face the same problem. I use an external monitor with my macbook. And when I disconnect the monitor (to pack up the macbook) there is an immediate color shift. I tried tinkering a bit and here's what I found. In the first screenshot you added, there is an option called colour profile (the one beside which it says BenQ SW270C). You can try changing it (click it to bring up a list of color profiles). In my case I found that I have 5 colour profiles with the same name as my monitor (HP model name). After trying out each of them I see that the colours of my Mac screen and external monitor match, but I get headaches and the color shift is still there. But if I switch to colour LCD (that's the default colour profile of macbook screens) there are no headaches but the color is horribly off, butttttt that colour shift/jump doesn't happen.

So yeah, you can try this for yourself. If it works great, if not, tough luck.

Peace!
