How to update AirTag firmware to latest version

I bought an AirTag and it came with the original, old firmware version. I tried leaving it literally next to my iPhone overnight and during daytime several times without any success. Today I tried a different approach: I opened the Find My app on my MacBook, selected the AirTag and played its sound to be sure it was connected to the MacBook; I then left the AirTag next to it for a while, then I quit the app and closed the lid. After that I left it next to my phone for a couple of minutes and when I came back it showed the latest firmware version had been installed.


I’m not sure if it was updated via the MacBook or the iPhone, but hopefully this can help others. Has anyone else been successful with this approach?

Thanks, I had read those articles already and since nothing had happened by itself for a while I decided to try the MacBook connection and it worked. As I mentioned, I’m not completely sure if the process worked due to the AirTag being reconnected to the iPhone after closing the lid or if it happened via the MacBook connection, I just know it worked and would like to know if it would work for others who haven’t seen the update happen just by placing the AirTag next to their iPhone and waiting 🙂

It works!


Had 5 AirTags and bought another one 3 weeks ago. The firmware was 1.0.291, latest version is 2.0.36. The intended use of the new AirTag is to be used where it can not normally be in contact with any of my Apple devices connected to my AppleID. Before starting to use it I wanted to have the latest version of the firmware.


It has been accompanied with my iPhones all the time since purchased. Nothing helped. Today I turned on ”Find my” on my Mac and left the app running accompanied by 2 iPhones. After about 1 hour the firmware was updated!
