Airplay not working in Music app on M1 Mac running Ventura 13.3.1

Hi all. I'm running a 13" M1 MacBook Pro (2020) on Ventura 13.3.1. Whenever I try to use Airplay to ANY Airplay speaker through the Music app, there is no audio. I've tried Airplay to a Sonos Move, Sonos Roam, and an Apple TV. No audio whenever connected to any of them.

Audio works fine through the Mac speakers (or any other connected wired speaker), AND I can Airplay when I change the speaker through System Settings. It's just Airplay through the Music app that results in no audio.

Using the Sound menu in System Settings is a workaround, but that does not allow Airplay to multiple speakers (and will send all the system sounds through the speaker where music is playing).

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Hey there MarkC0001,

We want to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. When did this start to occur with the Apple Music app?
  2. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  3. If you have a different device that you use with AirPlay and Apple Music, does that device have any issues using the same speakers you mentioned?

Cheers!

Hi,

I don't Airplay from my Mac all that often, more often I use an iPad or phone. But I did notice it happening now with Mac OS Ventura.

I have restarted both the Mac and the Music app with the same issue.

I have used several different Airplay devices, including an Apple TV, Sonos Move, and Sonos Roam. Every time I try to Airplay to ANY of those devices through the Music app on the Mac, sound disappears. This happens whether I try to Airplay just to the device, OR to the device AND my Mac speakers. As soon as Airplay turns on, all sound disappears, even from the Mac speakers.

Hi MarkC0001,

Thanks for providing further information. Let's start by ensuring all devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. For the purpose of troubleshooting, let's also disconnect your Mac from ethernet if it is connected. Once you've done that, please again restart the Mac, and also restart your AirPlay devices and the network hardware (router, modem). After you've completed those steps, let's test to see if you are able to use AirPlay on your Mac.

Cheers!

I had been using airplay from Mac Studio from Music app to my Kef wireless 2 speakers fairly frequently. I'm not sure or not the latest MacOs software undid that ability to airplay to the speakers,, but that indeed is what happened during the last couple of days. I tried almost every trick, made sure network was on same network etc, I almost gave up,, because spending ½ days trying to get it going again. After reading Jeff_W post,, I decided to unplug my Ethernet cable from Mac,, and lo and behold, it was working fine again. Thank you,, looks like I found a simple but effective solution as unplugging ethernet. Obviously, I still have Wifi from router working. I'm trying to figure out, why the Ethernet was interfering ? I might, just out of curiosity, reconnect the ethernet, and still see if my airplay to speakers is still working. My bet it will,, but at least, perhaps if goes haywire again, I know how to fix.
