Fixed Position Volume Controls

Our tech team at out district has been upgraded to the newest 12.9" iPad Pro. Our team doesn't want the volume buttons to automatically change based on orientation; we prefer keeping it static no matter what way we hold our iPads. However, we cannot find the "Fixed Position Volume Controls" as an option in Sound Settings. Is there a way to fix this issue?

Dynamic volume controls were introduced with release of iPadOS 15.4 onwards. For reasons known only to Apple, the ability to disable this feature in favour of fixed volume controls is not available for any new models of iPad and iPad Pro that have since been launched - these models being:

  • iPad Air5
  • iPad mini6
  • fourth generation iPad Pro 11”
  • sixth generation iPad Pro 12.9”
  • iPad10

This is documented within this recently updated Apple Support document:

I agree with you “LotusPilot”. My recently purchased iPad Pro 12.9 lacks the option of choice. While as my iPad Pro 10.5 purchased 3 or 4 years ago still has the convenience. Both iPad Pros are running iPadOS Version 16.5.

I am going to presume it was not an oversight and is part of “a master plan” that requires Apple users to go through a (somewhat forced) change “for our own good”.

Similar to the removal of the “Home Button”; “you’re gonna to get used to it and you’re gonna like it!” (Smile)

The “logic” behind dynamic volume controls is such that regardless of the screen orientation, the relative function remains constant. Once understood, the logic is intuitive…

  • When the physical buttons are positioned on a vertical edge of the iPad, the uppermost button will always increase the volume. Conversely, lower button will decrease the volume.

  • When the physical buttons are positioned on a horizontal edge of then iPad, the button on the right will increase the volume - while the button on the left will decrease the volume.
