My dead sons phone is locked and I really want the pictures out of it

Can I get my sons phone unlocked as he’s been dead for over 2 years now. I’m desperate to get the pictures out of it and the messages from him to me. I’ve been with Apple for over 10 years. Would I be able to get this done please? I’m so so sad I don’t know how else to save these pictures
