transfer data
I'm thinking of getting a new iMac. But how do I transfer all my existing data to the new iMac?? (Several hundred GigaBytes.)

By using Setup Assistant on first boot of the new Mac, with your Time Machine Drive connected to the new Mac, or later using Migration Assistant.
