From Apple regarding Locking Keychain

If your Mac keeps asking for your keychain password

Your keychain may be locked automatically if your computer has been inactive for a period of time or your user password and keychain password are out of sync. You can set a length of time that Keychain Access waits before automatically requiring you to enter your password again.

  1. In the Keychain Access app  on your Mac, click “login” in the Keychains list.
  2. Choose Edit > Change Settings for Keychain “login.”
  3. Select the “Lock after” checkbox, then enter a number of minutes.
  4. If you want to require a password each time the computer goes to sleep, select the “Lock when sleeping” checkbox.
  5. Click Save.

Hello lud14,

Welcome back to Apple Support Communities!

We can help better understand the two features. Passkeys and keychains are different. Keychains can store your passwords, where Passkeys are a replacement for passwords. See here for more details:

"Passkeys are a replacement for passwords. They are faster to sign in with, easier to use, and much more secure.

Passkeys are a replacement for passwords that are designed to provide websites and apps a passwordless sign-in experience that is both more convenient and more secure. Passkeys are a standard-based technology that, unlike passwords, are resistant to phishing, are always strong, and are designed so that there are no shared secrets. They simplify account registration for apps and websites, are easy to use, and work across all of your Apple devices, and even non-Apple devices within physical proximity."

This Apple Support page has the full details to better assist: About the security of passkeys - Apple Support

We hope this helps to better understand Passkeys on macOS.

Cheers!

This past week my iMac has been continuously bombarded by Keychain pop up messages (assistantd being one of many) requiring my login keychain password. They just won't stop. I type in the password and it goes away but then another comes back, and another. I have gone to the keychain app and unlocked the login but that doesn't fix it. My guess is that Ventura's latest update 13.6.4 has corrupted some code? I surfed some of the mac sites but the answers about deleting keychains, losing all your passwords, etc sound too scary (and cumbersome) to me. I have a MacBook Pro, iphone and iPad which all work fine. Just now, while typing this I got two keychain login pop up password requests.

Is there anyone who has a fix for this?
