Lost notes after turning off iCloud

I turned off my iCloud notes. I got a message that my iCloud was full about a week ago. So I presumed all the notes since then would be saved on my phone.

Inexplicably this is not the case. I don’t have any of the more recent notes even after turning iCloud back on. Not in recently deleted either.

How to recover? Thanks

Hello LeLocker,

iCloud is designed as a syncing service to share between devices. So if that is deactivated, it will removes notes from the devices no longer using iCloud. Checking the recently deleted was the right place, as some of those steps are located at Delete and recover notes on iCloud.com - Apple Support.

When you delete a note, it’s moved to the Recently Deleted folder on iCloud.com and on your devices that are signed in with the same Apple ID. You can view and recover notes in the Recently Deleted folder for up to 30 days before they’re permanently removed from all your devices. If you want to edit notes in the Recently Deleted folder, you must first recover them.

Were these notes shared to you? If so, then those do not go to recently deleted. They need to be shared again.

Thanks

Hello LeLocker,

If the notes were created when iCloud Notes was turned off, you should be able to find them in Folders > On My iPhone.

If they're not there and if a backup was created, you can restore a backup to get the notes back. Keep in mind restoring a backup will delete data that was created after the backup was made. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

If the notes are not in iCloud, not on your device, and not in a backup, there isn't a way to recover them.

Thanks.

I am using a Macbook at work. We don't have Apple IDs so the constant pop up reminders to login to iCloud were frustrating. I finally went to iCloud settings and unticked back up to iCloud in the hopes that it would stop trying to back up to a non existent iCloud, and therefore stop giving me the pop up.... and all my 2024 notes disappeared. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?? They were never backed up to iCloud, why would this affect my notes which were created and stored on the Macbook? And only those from this year? And lastly, how do I get them back? There is no deleted notes data, they've just vanished.
