Who do I get my Mac mini to recognize a second monitor if it does not do so automatically?

I got it worked out. It I tried a different monitor and it worked. I have a CalDigit Mini Hub and I was unable to connect two HDMi cables into it and have them work. Ended up plugging one into the hub and the other into the HDMi port on the Mac mini. I have two hp monitors one is a z22n and the other is a z24n. The older monitor was a HP(Compaq LA2205wg).
What are the monitors and how are they connected? One must use a Thunderbolt/USB-C port and the other must use the HDMI port.
