What's the downside of my using this old iPhone 7-Plus after the end of 2023 or whenever it stops being supported?

I'm really just a casual user. I like the APPs I have but is it possible that APPs might be upgraded and no longer work on a 7? Or would most APP producers still want them to work on older iPhones or not force upgrades on older iPhones that wouldn't work?

I realize that I'm already not getting updated on the iOS & I think I'm stuck on 15 but will that matter much?

I suppose there will be security risks if I'm on older OS or APPs. I don't know if that's a big problem as long as I don't go crazy with browsing or APPs or tap links in emails.

The iOS 15 still getting security updates. Nearly the all apps available in App Store work on iOS 15. In my opinion it will continue at least 2 years before the very little part of apps will stop work with iOS 15. And even when they do, you will still be able to run the older version of that apps.

But also I would like to mention that you will get comparable slow experience with your apps using the iPhone 7 Plus.

Thanks Gorzaryan. That makes me feel better about hanging with this 7-Plus for awhile longer. I got it used from my son when he got a newer iPhone. I recently put a new battery in it & I even recently put an expensive protection Otter Box case on it, so my being a cheapskate, I really didn't want to think that $ was wasted. 😉

It does have a broken camera lens cover but a nice repair shop guy said it would be expensive to replace but he fixed it by blowing any dust out and then covering it with clear tape.

I don't know if it's clear household tape or thicker packaging tape but I think I saw him get it off a little tape dispenser like everybody has for stuff.

The tape hasn't affected the camera focus at all, not on close-up shots or distant shots. I take plenty pics to save & also to post on Facebook.

The speed using APPs isn't a problem as long as it's at least as good as it is now. I've got plenty of time and I'm happy with how it works. I've been really happy ever since I switched from using a Microsoft phone to an iPhone since I couldn't get hardly any APPs for the Microsoft phone because of their closed Store system that offered so few of the APPs that I'd see were available for iPhones and Androids.

After 2019, Microsoft stopped support of Windows Mobile and even before that there were uncompetitive less apps in Microsoft Store for Windows Mobile.

My second phone is iPhone 7, and I still love it, the old Home Button and Touch ID makes me feel some nostalgia:)

Often the biggest problem of old smartphones is old battery. If battery wears out, it can’t deliver the full power for SoC so user catch freezes and slow experience. Since you changed battery, you will get comparable experience at least 2 years before battery will loose nearly 20% of original capacity.
