Message Count in Apple Mail Way Off

I am on an M2 Macbook Pro with Ventura 13.2.1. My inbox count shows that I have 9,223,372,036,854,775,350 messages with 29 unread. My inbox pulls in emails from my work and from gmail. When I click on either inbox separately, I get the correct count and then when I go back to the collective inbox, it also shows the correct count. Sometime later (and I can't identify doing anything out of the ordinary) the count goes back up to the insanely huge number again. Is there anything I can do to reset the database or something that will get the inbox count to be accurate?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Hi Sheree,

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I did everything and am still having the same issue. Count has changed slightly, so now it is reporting 9,223,372,036,854,775,787. So an additional 470 emails if I am doing my math correctly.

I'm guessing this may be more to do with Gmail than my work email. Although I'm pretty confident I haven't had that many emails over the time I've been on Gmail.

Hey mitchellfromglendale,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If you haven't, we recommend powering off and then powering on the MacBook Pro by following the steps below.

Restart your Mac
* On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Restart.
* If you don’t want app windows that are open to reopen when your Mac restarts, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”

We believe this is a great step because restarting refreshes the system and have been known to resolve software issue. You can also review the steps in this article: Shut down or restart your Mac

If the restart doesn't help, make sure the macOS is up-to-date. Updates may include new features, security updates, and/or fixes so it's best to keep them up-to-date. Below are the steps to check/update you macOS version.

Use Software Update

Before following these steps, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.
1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings or System Preferences.
* If you chose System Settings, click General on the left side of the window. Then click Software Update on the right.
* If you chose System Preferences, click Software Update in the window.
4. Software Update then checks for new software.
* If Software Update finds new software, click the button to install it. The button might be named Update Now, Upgrade Now, Install Now, or Restart Now, for example. You might then be asked to enter your administrator password.
* If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac.

Here's the article that provided the steps to update macOS: Update macOS on Mac If you do not see Software Update, follow the section in the article labeled "If you don't see Software Update".

If restarting and updating the Mac doesn't work, rebuilding the mailboxes in Mail on Mac: Rebuild mailboxes in Mail on Mac. Rebuilding the mails, "update the list of messages it contains"

Take care.

Based on the troubleshooting you have already tried, it might be helpful for you to speak directly with Apple about this issue.
