My AirTag battery cover will not come off. I have been trying to follow directions and press in on the silver back and rotate counterclockwise, but it will not even press in to allow me to rotate it. Anyone else having this problem and/or have advise for how I can get the back cover off? I've had it for a little over a year now and this will be the first battery replacement.

If you are unable to remove the battery cover of your AirTag, first ensure you are following these steps from How to replace the battery in your AirTag:
Replace your AirTag battery
1. Press down on the polished stainless steel battery cover of your AirTag and rotate counterclockwise until the cover stops rotating.
2. Remove the cover and battery.
3. Insert a new CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery (available at most electronic and drug stores) with the positive side facing up. You'll hear a sound indicating that the battery is connected.
4. CR2032 batteries with bitterant coatings might not work with AirTag or other battery-powered products, depending on the alignment of the coating in relation to the battery contacts.
5. Replace the cover, making sure that the three tabs on the cover align with the three slots on the AirTag.
6. Rotate the cover clockwise until it stops.

One possible reason might be because the battery had become swollen. This would make it difficult to remove the cover to access it. Although this should be rare, it is still a possibility.
If this is the case, be sure that you are pressing down with two fingers nearer the edges of the cover, and turning it counterclockwise ... just as shown in the image provided by Ben_Z1.
