Could not connect to Apple Watch

My new iPhone 14 plus and new Apple Watch SE + cellular, 2nd gen, are paired and was working great for a couple of weeks. And then 3 days ago, when I tried to connect the phone to the watch, the Watch app on the phone said “Could not connect to Apple Watch.” There was no red icon showing that the devices are not paired. I just can’t connect to my watch via the Watch App on my phone to make changes. Do I need to start over and reset the Watch? And re-pair the Watch and phone?

To save a lot of to and fro quastions, yes in iPhone, Watch app, My Watch tab, All Watches (at the top) can you see it and tap the (i) symbol?

If you can see it you are connected, but you should unpair and set up again

Unpair and erase your Apple Watch – Apple Support

(this will create a backup too)

Then set up your new watch

Set up your Apple Watch – Apple Support

If you cannot see your watch then Put your watch on its charger and keep it there until you complete these steps. (select the watch OS version)

Erase Apple Watch – Apple Support

Erasing all content and settings this way erases all media, data, and settings from your Apple Watch, but it does not remove Activation Lock if it has one.

Wait for the process to finish, then set up your Apple Watch again. Set up your Apple Watch – Apple Support (UK)
