New Apple TV remote shuts tv off then turns it back on

I have the first gen Apple TV 4K and just recently got the 3rd gen remote to replace my old one. My Apple TV box is connected to a Samsung tv. I successfully connected the new remote to the Apple TV. I used to be able to turn off the Apple TV and Samsung tv by using my Samsung remote power button to shut everything off. Now though, when I try to power off the Apple TV and the Samsung TV with either remote, it shuts everything off temporarily and then almost immediately turns back on. What should I do?

Hello AppleUser3746,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities.

Just to confirm, you want to be able to turn off the TV and the Apple TV with the same remote.

If that’s the case, you can follow the steps here to connect the Siri remote to your TV. You can learn how to do that here: Control your TV and volume with the Siri Remote - Apple Support

If you want to use the Samsung remote to control both devices, follow the steps found here: Use other remotes to control Apple TV - Apple Support

Kindest regards.
