I'm moving back to apple ios after a 8 year hiatus, one feature I really liked with Google Drive is the that recently used files showed up in the google chrome search file it made it really quick to retrieve client files and frequently used docs. Does Safari / icloud drive have something similar to this?

I don't know what Google does so I can't help with it, but Safari can open files on iCloud Drive or anywhere else with its File > Open menu selection. Then, you can create a Tab Group containing those files. Maybe that's what you need.
