Cycle Cadence for Apple Watch Ultra

I want to use a Wahoo cycling cadence sensor to connect to Strava on my Apple Watch. It connects to my iPhone, but can’t see how to connect it to my Apple Watch - I would appreciate any ideas? Thanks

I have just connected a cadence sensor to an Apple Watch. Not a Wahoo and not an Ultra but nonetheless this may help a little.

I recently bought a COOSPO BK467 cadence/speed sensor (it can be one or the other but not both at the same time as they need to be mounted in different places depending on the mode). I attached it to the inside (frame side) of the left crank so that it can't catch on my shoes.

The sensor connects via Bluetooth. However you do not use the Settings>Bluetooth screen to do this. You need to use the app concerned. I do not use Strava but I see that it has a Watch app. Presumably there is a settings screen within that that should have a sensors option.

However here is my experience which may prove relevant:

I use WorkOutDoors (highly recommended) which uniquely displays zoomable scrollable maps (with my own loaded GPX track files to follow) on the Apple Watch. It records my various activities. At the end of a "workout" it can automatically upload your data to Strava (as a FIT file I believe).

At first neither my iPhone (14 Pro) or Watch (Series 5) WorkOutDoors app could see the sensor. Nothing. I changed the battery in the sensor. Still nothing. Then I went to the Watch Settings>Bluetooth and tried turning that off and on. Still nothing.

Then in a moment of inspiration I unpaired my AirPods from the Watch (in Settings>Bluetooth) and bingo! Immediately both the Watch and the iPhone could see the sensor. And certain parameters could be configured on either device (eg amount of smoothing). Note however that it is connected just to the Watch. And the Watch is only paired to it (and the iPhone of course)

Now when I start a ride (both by initiating the WorkOutDoors app in Cycling mode and by physically pedalling - thus providing data) the Watch immediately recognises that a Cadence Sensor is attached and away I go.

I imagine that the Wahoo is treated just like any other Bluetooth Sensor such as the one I have, and I will guess that the connection to sensors in WatchOS 9.4 on the Ultra works in the same way as on the Series 5. So this may be relevant.

Quite what happens if you do want to have multiple sensors (eg speed as well or a HR monitor) connected at the same time I do not know. And I don't know why you can't have earphones connected wirelessly at the same time either. Still in my use case (and perhaps yours) all I need is the one sensor, and for now that seems to work just fine.

By the way I reckon WorkOutDoors would look amazing on the big screen of the Ultra. It's not at all bad on the much smaller S5. And you can zoom in to an impressive degree of detail. The maps come from OSM.

Best of luck. I hope this helps.
