Apple Music – Sync Library across devices without syncing old library

Hi!

I was a long time Spotify user, but just moved over to Apple Music (wanted lossless and HomePod support).

Now I would like to be able to sync Apple Music library/playlists across devices, just like I did in Spotify.

But the thing is, on my Mac, I have a large library of ripped CDs (going way back from the iTunes era) that I don't want to sync, I just want to leave it like it is.

So I created a new Music library that I would like to use just for the Apple Music stuff, hoping that I could choose to sync only this library from the Mac, but leave my old "ripped CDs library" unsynced and separated.

I was hoping that the Music settings in the different libraries were independent of one another, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I tried testing this by changing some of the settings in the new library I made, but then unfortunately the same changes appeared in the old one.

So now I'm afraid (and assuming) that if I turn on Sync Library in my new "Apple Music library", it will also start to sync my old "ripped CDs library".

Can anyone confirm if this is the case?

Thanks in advance!

Hi jazzpod,

Welcome to the Apple Music family! We can confirm that this is not the case.

All of your music files may be stored in the same location on your Mac, but each Music Library built based on the content you import or download to that library.

Your Apple Music Library (sometimes referred to as your iCloud Music Library) consists of the content that you either add to your device directly from Apple Music, or the content that you already had imported in your existing Music Library when you enabled Sync Library on that device. The content in your music files on your Mac will not automatically add to the new library that you created unless you import the music to the new library and then enable Sync Library.

With that said, do you recall if you enabled Sync Library in Music on your Mac before you created the new library? If you did, you may have already synced the imported CD content to your Apple Music Library.

This article from the Apple Music User Guide explains how to use multiple libraries in Music on your Mac.
