Apple mail app wit ha mind of its own

So my mail app is set up for a number of accounts google etc. Now I like to flag important emails but my Mac seems to flag emails I usually delete, it just seems to randomly add flags to random emails! Any idea what I might be doing wrong. Thanks

Can you verify your software is up to date…
