Privacy divorced and/or separated parents

Privacy needs for step by step specific directions on how to set up a dependent’s device where there are divorced or separated parents. Even though we get along, am not keen on Dad knowing everywhere Mom (me) goes and reading her texts. For some this might be a safety issue. Fortunately it is not for me but someone else might have personal safety issues with this. He can see everywhere I go and read my texts. The banking apps are not on the iPad. I need to know the specific steps to go through in order to fix this, preferably written. Thanks if anyone knows how.

If he can read your texts it sounds like you are sharing an Apple ID. Your solution to doing that would be to create your own ID. This document explains how to create a new Apple ID (create an Apple Account) --> How to create a new Apple ID - Apple Support

That did work, yes. It did turn out that son cannot text with it without going through my iPhone, but he does not use it to text. He just uses it for FaceTime and hopefully can Zoom to make calls on it to non-Apple users. The phone icon is no more but video conferencing hopefully will still allow use as an emergency device if ever needed, hopefully not. Have not tried to use it yet for maps or transportation tracking.

There does not seem to be a way for my son to use this generation 9 iPad as an emergency device to call out in any way to a non-ios user as texts and phone calls out are limited to users of ios. We could login to someone else’s Skype account to call a non-Apple ecosystem user, but this type of functionality seems limited, if someone with limited language ability needs to call out. Zoom, which special needs students used during the pandemic, went right to text notification when we tried to call family members, which does not work unless the other party is also using ios. I am paying for a separate phone line and found this misleading. Some of us use ios, but not everyone. Skype did use email instead of the extra phone line I am paying for. Nice to watch movies on, or use the internet using cell without needing to use my own device (or another parent) as a hotspot to entertain him. Would be good to know how he could use the phone line if he needs help somewhere, though. Looks like teaching him to use Skype is it.

To put it simply, iPads are not iPhones. I believe the cellular capability of iPads is limited to data connections for Internet purposes. Apple's Messages over the Internet is limited to the Apple ecosystem since it isn't a talk-text cellular service. As you are finding, you have to use third party apps which do interface to non-Apple devices if you wish to enable talk and messaging capability to those.

For emergency purposes you'd almost be better off getting him a Watch if he doesn't have a phone. Set up Apple Watch for a family member - Apple Support
