Is it just me or does the Airpods 3 have the quietest sound out of the earbuds out there ?

I feel like they can be louder than the maximum volume that apple allows but something with the algorithm just limits it to a very low max volume. In many cases the volume isn't loud enough to overpower just normal gym music. I definitely remember having wire earphones that were so loud that I would never set them to maximum volume but with the Airpods 3 if they aren't at max volume then I can hardly hear anything when I'm at the gym.

Is there data on the max decibels they can produce ? anyone else is experiencing this or my Airpods are just faulty ?

Hello moran130,

To help us get a better understanding of the issue, we’d like to ask a few questions.

1. Which device are you using your AirPods with? If you use them with multiple devices, do you experience the same issue with all of them?

2. If you're using your AirPods with iPhone, is the "Reduce Loud Sounds" setting enabled?

The above information will help us plan how to proceed.

Please check out this link, which will guide you through how to determine if the "Reduce Loud Sounds" setting is enabled, and may help: Use headphone audio level features on iPhone

Reduce loud headphone sounds in Settings
1. Go to Settings , then tap Sounds & Haptics (iPhone 7 and later) or Sounds (earlier models).
2. Tap Headphone Safety.
3. Turn on Reduce Loud Sounds, then drag the slider.
4. iPhone analyzes your headphone audio and reduces any sound above the level you set.
The Headphone Safety screen, showing the number of headphone notifications sent in the last 6 months, the button for turning on or off the Reduce Loud Sounds setting, a slider for changing the maximum decibel level, and the selected decibel limit of 85 decibels.

Note: If you set up Screen Time for family members, you can prevent them from changing the Reduce Loud Sounds level. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Reduce Loud Sounds, then select Don’t Allow.

Thanks!

Hi moran130,

We were able to find this page about headphone levels, but may not exactly answer your question:

Check your headphone levels on iPhone - Apple Support

We were able to find this about ambient noise, however this is only with AirPods Pro models:

Customize Transparency mode for AirPods Pro (all generations) - Apple Support

What we can suggest, is to contact Apple Support to verify that "Reduce Loud Sounds" is working as expected, as you mentioned that setting didn't make much difference.

Take care!

Hi Brittany,

thanks for the reply.

I use the airpods with my iPhone 13 and windows PC and the sound level is the same in both. I didn’t have Reduce Loud Sounds on. I just tried and it didn't make much difference. What’s the max decibels that the AirPods can produce ? Is it possible that the outside sensors are too sensitive therefore limiting the mac volume ?

thanks

moran
