Receiving duplicate messages, one as iMessage, another as SMS

I have an iPhone 13 Pro 256 GB running iOS 16.4. I have been receiving duplicate messages simultaneously from iPhone users sending me iMessages; the first comes in as an iMessage and the second as an SMS. I do not receive duplicate SMS messages from any Android users. This has been occurring through multiple updates of iOS. Is there a way to fix this?
